Welcome
Jeanine Snowden & Tanya Kamila welcome you to the Room 101
web page. Below you'll find a brief outline of some of our
procedures and miscellaneous classroom information. Please check
back periodically for photos and kid samples of our activities.
Academics
Jeanine is the math and science wizard in our class, while Tanya
blazes those reading and writing trails. Of course, themes are
interwoven throughout the year. This year's themes include:
China, human body, oceans. Science kits used
include organisms, weather and balls and ramps.
Homework
Homework packets are distributed each Monday and due the
following Friday. Pages may include reading and writing
activities, Everyday Math (our district curriculum), data gathering,
and poems to read with your family. Spelling will be
incorporated as the year progresses. Homework is intended to
reinforce and review the activities we are focusing on in class and
should not take more than 15 minutes each night.
Monthly reading calendars come home the beginning of each month.
Families record the amount of time read each day on this calendar.
We ask families to find a good time each day (which may not be right
before bed if the grown-up keeps nodding off!) to sit down with
their child and just read. Reading skills are the number one
predictor of school success. No better way to reinforce this
than the simple act of reading together -- no bells, whistles or
fancy programs needed!

We help at the University Food Bank every month. We
sort, scoop and bag many different kinds of food.
Field Trip to the International District
As part of our cultural study
of China, our class, along with the other first grade class, took a
trip
to the International District. We went to the Wing Luke
Museum and then had lunch at the House of Hong.
