The Resource Room

Room 201 (Ed. Resources)

Welcome to the Stevens Elementary Resource Room

The Resource Room at Stevens serves students who need extra academic support. The resource room functions under the umbrella of special education.  Our students come  to spend time with us throughout the day for short periods of time so that they can build on all of their strengths and discover their amazing capacities. Students in the program have specially designed educational plans called IEP’s (Individual Education Plans). We utilize psychological testing and reports as well as teacher and parent input to create education plans to help students succeed.   Parents and teachers who are concerned that a child may have learning disability can request an SIT meeting (Student Intervention Team) where parents and teachers meet as a team to help support students.  We are also more than happy to have parents visit us in person for resources and information. Kris can be reached at 252-3421.

Below is some more information about learning disabilities.  More information can be found on www.waukeshateens.org

What is a Learning Disability?

Learning disability is a common term that describes a range of learning problems.  Learning disabilities can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills.  The skills usually affected are: reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and doing math.

Learning disabilities (LD) change from person to person.  One person with LD may not have the same kind of learning problems than another person with LD.

Researchers think that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a person’s brain works and how it processes information.  Children with learning disabilities usually have average or above average intelligence.  Their brains simply process information differently.

There is no “cure” for learning disabilities.  They are life-long.  On the other hand, children with LD can be hard workers and can be taught ways around their learning disabilities.  With the right assistance, children with LD can be very successful.

Kids who have learning disabilities should know that they are not alone.  Having a learning disability means that you have to work extra hard.  Many people who have learning disabilities are creative thinkers and make unique connections.

Some really successful people who have a learning disability or ADD include:
