FIELDTRIPS: A Learning Expereince

Every year, the class goes on 5-6 fieldtrips. They usually serve as a capstone event - a way of ending a unit with a real world experience. The variety of trips we take is very broad and it changes almost every year. Below, you can find pictures from past trips taken by second and third grade classes. The trips taken by first graders and second graders will be different, but not substantially so.

Annual Trip: Farm Fun

Every year we visit a farm.

At Remlinger Farm, we enjoyed the hay maze, hay jump and climbing wall.

We also road a train, and saw a puppet show.

OUR TOWN: Seattle, WA

First grade classes begin to learn about neighborhoods and democratic government on the local level. They also learn about the geography of our city.
One year we were lucky enough to meet Mayor Greg Nickels. The mayor talked to us about his job and the mayors that have come before him. We also viewed art in the new city hall, and watched the City Council in the Council Chamber.

Our trip included all three branches of government: Executive, legislative, and judicial.

Fieldtrips augment instruction. But they also help build background knowledge that can be applied in a variety of contexts. Students that come from families who provide many enriching cultural experiences have more background knowledge from which to draw understanding. Fieldtrips help students/families with fewer economic resources by offering enriching experiences they might not otherwise have.

Civics and Geography

W
e also rode the speeding elevator to the top of a 610 foot tall landmark - The Space Needle. It is the perfect spot to see places like Lake Union, Capitol Hill, Queen Anne Hill, Downtown, Elliot Bay, Mt. Rainier, The Olympic Mountains, and The Cascade Range.

Each student also had the opportunity to visit the Municipal court and we met the presiding judge.
