Integrating Technology Into the Curriculum

In room 204 we use a variety of electronic technology to facilitate learning. It is important for students to learn how to use computer technology because it is a primary tool used in the business, academic, medical and even creative professions.

Standards are the basis of our instruction. In this constantly changing world, it's not easy for teachers to continually adjust and adapt their tried and true instructional techniques to the vagaries of advancing technological developments. Therefore, the use of technology standards helps to keep us on track. Technology is a tool which facilitates learning, builds basic life skills, and can increase student motivation. Below are some documents (in PDF format) that we are developing at Stevens in order to clarify exactly what skills are taught and when.

We use books on tape, video cameras, digital still cameras, film, electronic timers, voice recording, and electronic musical instruments. In fact, I even use earphones that deaden sound so that those who need a silent work area can get what they need.

Here are some of the ways in which we use technology in class:

  • Videotape reading to demonstrate/critique reading fluency
  • Books on tape to guide reading
  • Digital cameras to illustrate writing
  • Movies to present information
  • Computer games to increase the accuracy of basic skills
  • Learn basic keyboarding skills
  • Create art using color printers
  • Conduct research via the Internet
  • Communicate with other students and educators
  • Online books
  • Kid pages on government websites
  • ...and more
