Welcome to Room 301

Welcome To Room 301 - Miss Wilkie

Dear Room 301 Families,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year in fourth grade.  I am looking forward to teaching your child this year.  I began teaching at Stevens in February of 1996.

My behavior management system is fairly simple.  The students and I developed and agreed upon our class rules, which are:

1.      Be respectful of yourself and others.

2.      Be a good listener and follow directions.

3.      Raise your hand and wait to be called on to speak.

4.      Come to school on time and prepared.

5.      Do you best and have fun!

The consequences for not following the rules are as follows:

1st time is a verbal reminder

2nd time is loss of recess time

3rd time is a phone call home

4th time is speaking with Ms. Reinig

In the unusual case that a child does something terrible, I may go straight to number four of involving the principal, along with a phone call home.  I do not anticipate needing to do this, but this was clearly discussed with the students.  The students are the ones who decided on the progression of consequences.

We will be using table points as a reward system for positive behavior.  These points will be given to the table(s) who are on task, working well together, or all working independently (depending on the given expectation), everyone is participating, along with many other possibilities based on the given situation.  Each Monday there will be a small treat for the table with the most points from the previous week.

In addition, we will, as a class, set point goals for good behavior and work towards incentives.  Points will be awarded for following the rules extremely well, being respectful, receiving complements from other adults in the building, and for working well together.  The students and I will determine appropriate points goal and reward.

News From Room 301 and Homework:

A weekly newsletter will be sent home each Monday.  The newsletter will include upcoming events and activities, general class information, reminders, projects, reports on past activities, and student of the week.  As well, each week’s homework assignments are included on the weekly newsletter.  All of the homework is due on Friday, unless otherwise specified.  A monthly reading genre will be assigned with a book report due on the last school day of each month (or very close to the last day).  This information will all be sent home through the newsletter as well.

Assessment:

Assessment is an ongoing process throughout the school year.  The students and I will correct their daily work in class, I will give regular reading and math quizzes and tests, and we will have weekly spelling tests.  In addition, students will be writing regularly, which will be assessed, as will all of their class work and homework.  We will be doing the district provided classroom-based assessments, as they are appropriate to what we are learning.  We will be taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in the spring.  The testing window begins in April following Spring Break.  I will print the exact testing schedule in our weekly newsletter as the testing window gets closer.

Parent Communication:

I believe a student does their best and excels the most when there is a good relationship between teacher, student, and parents.  I strongly encourage you to take part in your child’s education because the rewards can be limitless for everyone involved.  Don’t hesitate to call me at school (252-3429) or send a note with any questions or concerns throughout the school year.  You may also reach me through email at clwilkie@seattleschools.org.
