I am Mary Anne Christy, the Historian in
Residence at Stevens. This year I will visit all of the 2nd,
3rd, 4th and 5th grade
classes (with stealth visits into some of the younger
classrooms as well). When I come, I bring stories,
activities and drama from the periods of history that your
children are studying in class. Generally, I supplement the
traditional, broader social studies curriculum in order to
bring a richer experience of history to the students.
My goal is to engage students in great
stories from history in many cultures, to teach lessons from
history that can inform their daily lives and center their
moral compasses and to give them background information on
the culture in which they live. This year, I will also
assist in instituting Curriculum Based Assessments (the
Social Studies version of the WASL) in 4th and 5th
grade classes.
Over the course of the year, I will bring The
Revolution and The Civil War to the 5th graders,
Old Seattle to the 4th graders, The Underground
Railroad to the 3rd graders in Ms. Ingham’s room
and Ancient Egyptian mythology and history to the 3rd
graders in Ms. Hanson’s room, the Aztecs to the 2nd
graders, Ancient China to some of the 1st graders
and The Japanese Tea Ceremony (visited by Samurais) to some
of the kindergartners.
I will be all over Stevens throughout the
year. Hope to see you around the halls. You can always
recognize me; I’m the one with the big green bag!
